Baltimore Sports and Life: “In the 2011 class, the University of Maryland has received signed Letters of Intent from Sterling Gibbs, and Nick Faust. Let us discuss Gibbs first. I know earlier in his career Gibbs (the brother of Pitt’s Ashton Gibbs) had the reputation of having a score first mentality, despite running the point. How do you feel he has progressed as a PG? What do you see as his strengths, and what has limited him from being held in higher-esteem?”

Jerry Meyer: “Gibbs is a nice all around player who can play both the point and the two. He is not the biggest guy nor the most athletic player and that has affected his ranking. But he is smart and skilled and will be a solid contributor at Maryland.”

Baltimore Sports and Life: “Baltimore’s Nick Faust cracks The Rivals.com 150 at number 42 overall. The 6’5 four-star 2G will arrive in College Park as one of the most heralded Terrapin recruits in years. Does he have the offensive skill-set (and defensive intensity required from Coach Williams) to make a significant impact as a Freshman?”

Jerry Meyer: “Faust certainly has the offensive skill-set to make an impact. He is one of the best shooters in the incoming freshman class. His passing and overall ball handling needs to improve, but the ability to score is intact. He will have to improve defensively to please Coach Williams. Faust does tend to lose focus on the defensive end.”

Baltimore Sports and Life: “Assuming Jordan Williams returns, I’m looking at a Terps 2011-12 roster that could look like:
1)
Howard, Gibbs
2) Stoglin, Faust
3) Mosley, Parker
4) Palsson, Padgett, Pankey
5) Williams, Weijs

Maryland would like to add some additional post-depth, and continues to recruit PF/C Desmond Hubert. Reports have had Hubert deciding between North Carolina and Maryland for some-time. Where do you see Hubert winding-up? How does his game compare to Padgett and Pankey (before they entered College)?”

Jerry Meyer: “I’m not sure where Hubert is going to wind up. He is on record saying it is between Maryland and North Carolina. Hubert is probably at about the same stage as Padgett and Pankey coming in. I’m not saying his game is just like theirs, but Hubert will need some time before he is ready to make an impact in the ACC.”

Baltimore Sports and Life: “Maryland has also offered a scholarship to the 6’9 German Martin Breunig. The video on him appears to show advanced offensive skills and a traditional Euro big-man game. Have you had the chance to see him?”

Jerry Meyer: “No.”

Baltimore Sports and Life: “Locally a name that is receiving buzz is SF Greg Whittington. He is playing limited competition in Howard County (MD) but showed his ability on the AAU Circuit last Summer. He still looks like a guy that has not received much attention by the recruiting services. Do you regard him as a legitimate high-major player?”

Jerry Meyer: “Haven’t seen him.”

Baltimore Sports and Life: “Former Terp (and current Memphis Grizzlie) Greivis Vasquez has been touting Todd Mayo to the Maryland Coaching staff. Rivals.com lists him as 3 star talent with offers from Tennessee, West Virginia, Missouri, and Southern Mississippi.  Can the Terps get involved here? Should they?”

Jerry Meyer: “Mayo is a good player but there are questions about his eligibility. I’m not sure what the very latest on Mayo is.”

Baltimore Sports and Life: “Thoughts on Bino Ranson and his abilities as a recruiter?”

Jerry Meyer: “No thoughts.”

Baltimore Sports and Life: “Wally Judge was a Top 20 5 Star recruit that signed with Kansas State. In the middle of his Sophomore year with the Wildcats, the 6’9 PF left the KState program. It is said that the former DC Assault player is considering transferring to Maryland. Despite averaging just 4 points and 3.3 boards in 53 games with KSU, would you consider him a program changing talent?”

Jerry Meyer: “Based on how he performed at Kansas State, you can’t consider him a program changer. Judge is extremely athletic and has some skills but he wasn’t able to put it together to be a productive player. He was ranked high largely on his potential, but results haven’t materialized. Maybe they will at his next stop.”

Baltimore Sports and Life: “Looking ahead to 2012, we have heard of Maryland pursuing Justin Anderson, and Shaquille Cleare among others. Thoughts of where you think the Terps stand with them? Other names you are hearing with the Terps?”

Jerry Meyer: “I’ll know more on this in a couple of months.”
