The second half is underway, so I thought I’d give a quick update on the current World Series odds as of July 18.

(You can discuss this on the BSL Board here.)

The Cubs and Giants are the clear favorites, both coming in at 7-2 odds. Is there something to the Giants “even year” thing? This would be 4 straight even year titles if they can pull it out. The Cubbies haven’t been playing well of late, but got out to such a big lead in the NL Central that they’re still virtually a lock to get to the playoffs. I wouldn’t bet on either right now to win the World Series.

The two most interesting teams to me are next in line, Washington at 8-1, and Texas at 9-1. The Nats starting pitching is outstanding, but they still lack an arm in the pen, and I think they need a right handed power bat as well. They’re far from perfect, but 8-1 is GREAT value for a team with that staff. Texas’ issues right now is the starting rotation, but they’re supposedly working on a deal for Matt Moore as i type this. A healthy Yu Darvish is obviously the key. Put him with Cole Hamels and that’s a great 1-2 in October. Again, 9-1, is great value.

Cleveland and their sick rotation comes in at 10-1, but their offense is a big question mark, especially with Michael Brantley not likely to be 100% this season. The Orioles are currently next at 14-1, and we all know the issues here. Literally the opposite of Cleveland.

Up next are the Red Sox and Blue Jays, both at 15-1, Houston at 16-1, the LA Dodgers are 20-1 currently, while the Mets are 25-1. Miami is at 30-1, with Detroit and St Louis both at 40-1.

That’s probably it for “serious contenders’. If I were to make a bet before the deadline, I’d probably for value reasons take either Washington or Cleveland.

Thoughts?
