Sharing the same name as Stanford’s head coach, this young defensive lineman is the second member of the Terps’ Class of 2014. Randy Edsall and his staff got to Shaw very early in the recruiting process before many other teams had a chance to look at him. While he received some mild interest from Connecticut, Penn State, Pittsburgh, and Temple, no one but Maryland offered him a scholarship.

Shaw has very good size for an incoming freshman, but will need to bulk up a bit more if he wants to play nose guard in Brian Stewart’s 3-4 system. Another option for him is to stay at the size he is and play at one of the defensive end positions. For the most part however, he projects as a nose guard. Coach Edsall is building depth at that position for the competition that will take place when current starter Darius Kilgo graduates after the 2014 season. There is no clear cut starter behind him, and the competition will likely be between a large group of younger players.

David’s two brothers went to Penn State, but he decided to pave his own path by committing to Maryland. His high school coach is Russ Stoner, who has a relationship with Mike Locksley, the Terps’ offensive coordinator. I’d expect him to redshirt the 2014 season while learning behind the other more experienced defensive linemen on the team.
