Tied with the Cavaliers at half-time, it appeared that the University of Maryland would have a good opportunity to get back to .500 in ACC play with an upset victory at Virgina today. However, the Terrapins provided their ugliest 20 minutes of play since the Iona game, and got blown out of the John Paul Jones Arena losing 71-44.

MD was out-scored 40-13 in the 2nd half. With the loss, the Terps fall to 15-11 overall, 5-7 in the ACC.

The Good:

1) Faust gave the Terps their first FG (with 15:49 left in the 1st), with a 3 that pulled MD within 1 at 7-6. Faust got MD to within 4 (24-20) with an aggressive drive. The half ended with Faust rising up with confidence and burying a 3 to tie the game at 31. Faust had a good defensive game as well, bottling up Zeglinski when they were matched-up. Faust finished with 13 points, and 3 boards.

2) Like Faust, Parker’s offense today also started with a 3. Parker’s best work often comes on the boards, today he had 7.

3) With Howard out, and the bench thinner, I thought Coach Turgeon did a good job with his substitution pattern and getting MD’s players quick rests. I was also fine with Turgeon emptying his bench and giving the walk on players extended minutes to end the game.

4) Stoglin’s scoring got going with a 3 in the middle of the 1st. Down 17-12, he came away with a steal showing quick hands. His fourth 3 gave MD the 26-24 lead, and completed an 11-0 MD run. Stoglin had a poor shooting game overall, but his 4 boards, and 2 steals were good to see.

5) Padgett gave MD their 2nd two point FG (with 2 mts left in the half), with a nice move in the post. I liked that the Terps went right into Padgett to start the 2nd half.

6) Pankey had 8 boards.

The Bad:

1) Too much dribbling from Stoglin on MD’s first possession. Obviously he is the best offensive weapon, but this was an example of where Stoglin needs to be willing to move the ball.
1a) Stoglin later picked up a charge on a push off. His shooting was off, as he finished just 4 of 16 from the floor.

2) Weijs also had an early push off, and dropped a pass from Faust in the lane. The Weijs stat line showed nothing but zeros aside from the 2 fouls he picked up.

3) Down 7-0 early on, Mosley and Len both forced 3’s. Mosley’s shot was not in the flow of the offense, and obviously you would prefer your 7 footer to be looking for offense down low.

4) MD wasted a possession when Faust stepped on the baseline under the UVA basket.  Three times in the 2nd half he turned the ball over with little defensive pressure on him. Faust finished with 5 turnovers.

5) Pankey, Parker, and Faust each had opportunities at the rim that they were not able to finish.

6) Padgett air-balled a FT. As a trio, Padgett, Pankey, and Len combined for 3 of 11 shooting from the floor, and went 4 of 8 from the foul line. Like Weijs, Len’s stat-line was filled with zeros.

7) Mike Scott has put up big games against a lot of teams this year, so you understand defending him will be difficult. I personally would have liked to have seen MD change the defense on him, and ask other Cavaliers to beat them. If you were going to let Scott get his, you needed to provide better defense on Scott’s teammates. Scott finished with 25 points.

8) Down 47-35, MD had the opportunity to run, Mosley slowed the ball down, and then attempted to go the rim. He was called for walking. He would be called for walking two more times in the 2nd half. Mosley is not the star of this team, but the difference in MD when provides some offense and when he does not is striking. Mosley had more turnovers than points. (4 to 2.)

The Ugly:

1) UVA came out hitting their first 3 shots, and taking a 7-0 lead.

2) MD started the game 3 of 19 from the floor. Missing 9 consecutive shots during that stretch. The Terps finished 14 of 52 from the floor (27%).

3) After Padgett scored to start the 2nd half, MD went scoreless over the next 8 minutes, missing 8 shots and turning the ball over 5 times. UVA went on a 16-0 run during this time to go up 47-33. Coach Turgeon can not score for the Terps, but I felt he did a poor job of slowing the UVA run, and making adjustments.

3a) 11 minutes into the 2nd half, the Terps had scored just 4 points. MD had 11 turnovers in the 2nd half.
