They've been sporting a top 5 payroll though, and were around $200M in average annual salary payroll last year. They bought that championship. I'm not sure this is a fair criticism for the Lerners, as much as I despise them. They HAVE invested heavily in winning baseball in DC.

No. My question is legitimate.

They spent some to win one championship. They shouldn't continue to spend to win more?

So you think it's reasonable to expect an owner to shell out over half a billion dollars in one off-season on two players, with an already inflated payroll?

Damn, I'd love to have your future kids allowance one day.

When the owners are billionaires making a couple hundred million every year before one person buys a ticket or a beer, sure.

They let Harper go and won a WS. Who's to say they let one of Stras or Rendon walk and can't win another?

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Nats fans should want them to take that chance?

Where are you in the Astros thread about Cole? Or the Mets thread about Wheeler, etc.?

Maybe they think it’s stupid to spend the money on these guys that are asking for? Because it is.

Do they have to spend on what it would take to retain them 'to spend'?

Do they have to spend to win?

Nats ownership is saying it can only afford Rendon or Strasburg. Not both.

No problem with teams making these types of decisions, they should just say something like “not in our ideal budget” instead of “can’t afford”. It’s disingenuous and not fooling anybody.

$245 Million. They'll regret that.
