Markakis has played LF in his first three games back - if this keeps up he might not actually set the record for games played in RF.

Acuna in CF or RF make sense.

Woah, pump the brakes there champ. That said, I'm pulling for you. I like that team a lot, seems like a great group. I could totally see it and get behind a Braves WS run.

Ken: With the Harold Baines induction in the HOF and Nick Markakis at 2355 hits at age 35, is there better than a non-zero chance that he is able to hang around long to collect his 3,000 hits. As a die hard O’s fan my wife would be ecstatic (I am a Yankee fan and once lovingly called my wife’s team a cute little franchise) but good god Markakis in the hall? I might never hear the end of it!!!!!!!!!!

Keith Law: I think if Markakis gets to 3000 hits, he’ll be the first non-PED-assumed player to reach that mark and not get in through the BBWAA vote.

He's probably right...think of who will be voting by then...a lot of people who won't care as much about 3000 hits as the "old guard" does.

Losing 3k hits as a rubber stamp for the Hall of Fame would bother me more than electing a clearly undeserving guy like Nick into the Hall of Fame.

I like the numbers.  I think there is beauty in them.  I like seeing guys chase the records and count down the hits or homers or wins or whatever.  I like knowing that a certain number punches your ticket (barring character reasons to exclude).  Nick's got no business being in the Hall of Fame, but the conversation complaining about him being elected won't annoy me nearly as much as I enjoy watching everyone else track down the milestones and a part of that enjoyment is knowing that they cement their eternal status once they reach it.

The subject of the conversation being a guy I really like probably sways the above opinion quite a bit as well.  If it were AJ Pierzynski knocking down on 3,000 I don't think I'd be as sentimental about the quest.

Hopefully he's right and he likely is due to what Rob is saying.

Why is being excellent at consistency and longevity completely dismissed?

Sure Markakis would be an outlier based on the flashiness of the names in the HOF, but what he has excelled at, still put shim in rarified air and I'm not entirely in agreement that he shouldn't be rewarded for that.

650 hits is a lot when you're 36, but it would be awesome if he got there.

It was a good cheap signing. He'll play more games in the first 1/2 of the season. Pache or Waters will replace him by July.

The Bill James favorite toy still gives Markakis a 30% chance of reaching 3,000 hits, the second-highest percentage of all players (behind Cabrera).  Manny is at 17%, and Jones is 12%.
