I recognize they aren't going to be good, but I kind of like (at-least am interested to see how it looks on the floor) the lineup they've put together...

1 Dennis Smith

2 RJ Barrett

3 Kevin Knox

4 Bobby Portis

5 Julius Randle

Randle had a big year last year.   1-3 you've got some potential. How good are they?

Not a playoff team unless RJ becomes a superstar quickly.

That would be the 'not going to be good' part.

Lot of people down on Smith and Knox, but there is some talent there.  In a situation where they can get major minutes and either develop or not.

Best case for them is that those guys all show something this year, but they don't make the playoffs.

They'll be somewhat interesting to watch, but they'll also be really bad.

They also got Bullock, Taj Gibson, and just got Wayne Ellington.

They could be somewhat competitive, especially if they play the vets a decent amount.

Knicks fans are disappointed that they didn't offer Durant the max (they apparently didn't even get a meeting).

But, they have been burned by injuries in the past and I can see how they would be hesitant to offer him the deal without knowing all the medical info.

That being said, they geared up for this and lost again.  They can't draw players to NY.

Now, it appears they are gearing up for free agency in 2 years.  All of these guys are getting 2 years, except Randle, who got 3 years (and who should be relatively easy to trade if needs be).

https://www.spotrac....ee-agents/2021/

That's a big FA class and if some of these young guys develop well and they have a lot of money, they could be a good destination.

The issue there is Dolan.  I don't know how many legit guys will want to go to NY with him owning the team.  That is their biggest hurdle.

I think I saw that the Randle deal is only 2 guaranteed years, but not sure.

Also, Mitchell Robinson should start for them and I think would be their best young player, possibly best player period next year. If he gets a lot of playing time and they minimize how reliant they are on the younger perimeter players, they could be solid.

However, it makes sense for them to let RJ, Dennis Smith Jr, and Knox play significant roles for development purposes.

Looking rough so far.  Thought this would be a .500 team in the East.  Lack of stars, but there is talent on the roster.. shouldn't be a disaster.

The Knicks have been a dumpster fire for a long time now.  Dolan and his guys have succeeded in making what used to be the marquee team in the nations biggest market irrelevant.

Eh, I'm not sure that there are 3 worse rosters for the present.

I will say that Mitchell Robinson should be playing a lot more.

Edit: I'm actually pretty sure that this is one of the three worst rosters to win now with. They're a strong contender for the worst.

I actually think no one any good, wants to play for Dolan.

The pieces don't seem to work.

Payton is considered athletic, and a good defender right?  Looks like he's injured.

See D. Smith has barely played... also hurt? (Do see he's missed time due to a death in his family.)  What's happened to him?  '17-'18, was a 15ppg guy, who had some big moments as a rookie.

Frank Ntilkina looked nice in the World Cup.. enough where I thought he'd be a usable reserve.

Randle, Mitchell, Morris... nothing great, but all decent.

Portis, Gibson, Ellington...  again, should be usable.

Knox pretty explosive, looking at his numbers... seems raw?

Barrett looks to be off to a decent start.

I can see where the pieces aren't good enough, but surprised they are so inept.

Will defer to you about them being one of the 3 worst current rosters.

I agree that the pieces don't fit that well, but there also aren't many decent pieces, let alone good ones.

Payton has pretty much been a bust and I don't think there's much shine left on those other guards you mentioned, although maybe Smith, who has barely played, becomes a good scorer off the bench type.

Morris can be a solid guy to have as like your 6th best player, but asking more out of him isn't going to work.

Randle has talent and has been pretty good, but I'm not sure if he's really a winning basketball player, at least in the role he's been in recently. Like Smith, he may be better suited as a bench scorer/ creator type.

Portis and Gibson are ok as a backup bigs.

Knox could be something in the future, but isn't contributing to winning now.

Mitchell Robinson is probably their best player, and like I said, should be playing a lot more.

Then there's RJ, whom I'm opinionated about, but regardless of my thoughts on his future, is not someone a team can win with as the guy or close to it at this point. His points, rebound, and assist numbers are decent, but if you dig deeper, he's been pretty bad so far. That's doesn't mean he can't improve of course.

Overall, this is a team that is largely depending on RJ, Randle, and Morris to win games, which is a horrific "big 3" to win now with. Then there's Portis and Knox as the next two most relied upon players, which is also quite bad.
