Edward Encina--The Sun's Orioles beat reporter--was there. He's quoted in the CNN story.

It must have been nice for you to finally move on from the ol' telegraph.

Btw, do kids aged 13 or younger even know what a "dial tone" is?

When I was young, my grandparents gave me and my sister an old rotary phone to use as a toy. Had a lot of fun with it.

I can't wait to bore my kids with stories of life before the Internet and mobile phones.

When I was young, my grandparents gave me and my sister an old rotary phone to use as a toy. Had a lot of fun with it.

Since they worked based the number of click-pulses that happened after you released the dial and it rotated back to its original position, if you were really,  really good with your timing, you could dial a number by clicking really fast on the buttons where the handset rested.... (the receiver-hooks on wall phones were too clunky, you couldn't do it fast enough on those...)

You could also tell what number somebody was dialing without watching them do it, just by listening to how long the whirring sound took while the dial rotated back to it's starting position...

To me, the fact that they could make an automated system based on nothing but electrical pulses, magnets, and mechanical switches is way more amazing than the way it's done now with computers.  Figuring out how to make that work required a certain kind of genius.

My dad worked at the phone company, and when I was a little kid I'd go in there and watch the *walls* of electro-mechanical switches do their thing:
