@RapSheet: RT @ryanohalloran #jaguars GM Dave Caldwell says via text "not us" who has deal in place for SF QB Alex Smith.

@nfldraftscout: Per @MaryKayCabot, the #Browns are not trading for Alex Smith. Cross of Jacksonville and Cleveland. Hope Alex likes BBQ.

I got a weird feeling it's the Jets. It just has that kind of "you can't be this dumb, right?" feel to it.

The fact the team hasn't been named yet does have that feel of "team out of nowhere".

I still think its KC though.

KC would make sense. He's a lot like Matt Cassell when he got the KC job in that he has many people tricked into thinking that he's an actual NFL quarterback.

I'm hoping it's Smith to the Jets for a fifth-rounder and Tim Tebow.

Ouch. I don't think he's nearly as bad as Matt Cassell. He had a very solid team around him the last 2 years but two seasons ago he was a bounced ball off a knee away from leading his team to the Super Bowl and last season his team was 6-2 before he got injured. Don't forget, he also had to deal with a new OC every year until Harbaugh and Roman got to SF. I don't think it's a coincidence that once those two arrived in SF he suddenly started living up to the potential that had him as a #1 overall pick.

If he runs better than Matt Cassell, then I guess they will gain that. If the Chiefs told Cassell to not attempt anything but high percentage passes, he'd be as good a thrower as Smith. That's how Smith fixed his numbers, and also how he ended up on the bench. You basically eliminate your passing game as an offensive weapon with Alex Smith.

Mike Florio said on the Dan Patrick Show that he felt the Niners leaked this information to draw out interest from other teams, but that they did not have a deal in-place.

My big question about Smith is, how good will he be away from Harbaugh?

If he goes to KC, that is a pretty talented team plus they get the #1 pick.

I can see them having a deal in place, but wanting to put some pressure on other teams who might want to make a deal.

Ian Rapoport‏@RapSheet

Source confirms @JayGlazer report of Alex Smith-Chiefs trade: "He's going to be a Chief." Source says it's for at least a 2nd rounder.

Ian Rapoport‏@RapSheet

The trade of #49ers QB Alex Smith to #Chiefs was completed this morning. Compensation is "substantial." A 2nd & @Timkawakami says more in 14

A 2nd being the 1st pick of the 2nd round?

Hell of a haul for the 49ers if true.

Yep...and the 49ers have a boatload of picks this year.

They could make some real noise and really trade up in the draft. They will likely look at secondary early on.

Conditional mid round pick...Essentially, they probably could end up with a 3rd or 4th rounder depending on the playing time and success of Smith.

SF now owns picks at No. 31, 34, and 61 in a draft with lots of depth but not a lot of surefire stars.

Trading Alex Smith increases 49ers draft pick total to 15. They are NE Patriots of the draft. Talented team with unlimited options

49ers are the best organization top to bottom in the NFC. Up there with Baltimore and NE overall. They'll be a reg contender over the next decade. Great FO, great coach, great players.
