ESPN: John L. Smith out at Arkansas

Pending Chip Kelly's potential departure, and assuming there's no serious NCAA penalties, this could be the most attractive job opening. It might even be if that job does open. This was a top-10 team at the beginning of the year, in the SEC, recently upgraded facilities, etc.

I thought they'd be a little better than 7-5, but not by much. I don't know that their ceiling is any higher than what O'Brien, and Amato before him, were able to achieve. But I'm sure Debbie Yow wants to get her own hire in there. But there are going to be much more attractive job openings this winter that NCSU will have to compete against.

There's a few clich├ęs in there, but I digress.

Black Monday in the NFL is better known, but this has been one very busy Black Sunday for college football.

ESPN: Long road back to college for Jim Tressel

http://espn.go.com/b...for-jim-tressel

Saw this on Twitter since Tressel is unsurprisingly a popular choice for many programs. Article was written last year.

Jim Tressel turned 59 earlier this month. If he wants to coach college football again, he almost certainly will have to wait until at least Dec. 17, 2016, when he would be 64.

The possible candidates reportedly include Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach Mark Whipple, Harvard coach Tim Murphy, Kent State coach Darrell Hazell, Miami coach Al Golden and Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco.

Whether he'd be seriously interested or not, expect his name to be linked to Oregon if/when Chip Kelly heads to the NFL.

Arkansas offering LSU coach Les Miles 5 years/$32 million, per ESPN. Don't think Arkansas is a better situation at all. Question is whether LSU will come close to matching to keep him.

I think he'll stay, probably uses this as leverage. If he was going to leave, it would've been five years ago for Michigan IMO.

This is like Boston trying to hire Joe Girardi away from the Yankees this offseason.

Agreed, but if he does there will be backlash much worse than whenKiffin flew the coop from Tenn to USC.

And Kiffin doesn't have to worry about going to Knoxville every other year either. As has been said, if LSU offers an extension to match, I think he stays. He'd be crazy not to.

Then again, this is Les Miles we're talking about.

ESPN: Big paychecks, big expectations

http://espn.go.com/c...-football-coach

I think any coach at a school NOT in the league of Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, Notre Dame, etc, needs a minimum of three years, preferably five to make their mark on the program. The Southern Miss one is the first time I've seen a program fire a full-fledged coach after a single season excluding scandal and likely, NCAA violations.

That said, if you can tell that you are just delaying the inevitable, than it's probably better to cut your losses. Just a different world today than it was 20 years ago.

Also from the AD/admin POV, they need to make $$$ -- get donations, sell tickets, recieve exposure, etc. And if the "stakeholders" aren't buying in, it's harder to justify keeping a coach.
