One year, $3 million, with a club option for a second.

SS Jose Iglesias has agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the Orioles, per source. Deal includes a 2021 club option that would make the deal worth $6 million over two years.

He's a legitimate Major Leaguer.  The signing makes the 2020 product better.  I'm pleased.

2019: .288 / .318 / .407   11 homers, 3 triples, 21 doubles, 20 walks, 70 k's.

Don't think we should be giving much weight anymore to DRS  and UZR / 150... but for the record, he was +8 in DRS, and + 7.6 in UZR / 150 in 2019.

He can really play shortstop.

Not that much offensively, but he is a plus defender.

Far from life changing, but a steady defender, and a veteran in case they do start to bring up some kids..

Can't hurt.

Agreed, the product as it stands now is awful, but signings like this, make it look more major league quality.

I'm good with this.  An acceptable major leaguer.  If they use the saved money to improve the team (for the future), I'd also be fine with going from Villar to Iglesias at SS.  I strongly suspect we never see that money though.

His glove will help out the pitchers, so that's a plus.

He has been an obvious target for a while.

Never hurts to have good defense.

The bat will play a little too.

It's always good to have competent major league players, and the O's had a complete void at SS, so this is good, I guess.  Iglesias might have been a star in the 70's, when a .288 batting average and a good glove was all a SS needed.

I would hope not, but it is the Orioles, so what does it matter.

His numbers were decent last year.  He has improved since his early years.

I'm excited to watch his glove, anything he produces at the plate is a plus, although his career 12% strikeout rate is cool. Now, we just need pitchers who can keep the ball on the ground.

I look for an angle that makes any difference.  I'm not a big Iglesias guy but he's an excellent defender with little bat.  He's not part of anything now or later...I look at him in the same light as Martin or Cadyn Grenier.

Iglesias makes no difference, so....

1) Does pushing Martin to AAA allow something to happen with Martin in his development that is meaningful?

2) Does Iglesias experience help Alberto or Ruiz in some way that makes them more relevant at some point?

3) Does Iglesias' glove help build Cobb's trade value or improve the development of (eventually) Akin and Kremer?

1 & 2 seem like a reach.

3...maybe, not so much for Cobb, but catching the ball encourages pitchers to attack the zone so maybe there's some value there although that would really speak poorly of Martin.

Here's a thought....

4) Improved defense helps the game end earlier each night so less pain and suffering!  We should all pitch in for that. :)

Lets use the "angle that makes any difference....part of anything now or later...."

With that criteria the O's shouldn't sign anybody till at least the end of next season.

I think you could make an argument for some FAs using opportunity to create some trade value.

While it would probably surprise me with Iglesias, I guess maybe you could deliver an un-rated DSL player or the 14th pick from a recent draft as trade opportunity.  Maybe.

For whatever reasons, they've put out through Roch (and others I guess) the need for a defensive oriented SS.

So they got one and it feels a little more like they think they are using him for some reason (not trade value).

In general, the Orioles aren't signing anyone meaningful.  They signed Stewart, they signed Iglesias, they might sign someone else....but they aren't signing these guys to really change anything....just survive this season.

Helping the defense when you have a young staff isn’t insignificant.

Development, confidence, etc...mean a lot more this year than a few extra wins.

And btw, nothing they could have done this year would have mattered for this year.

I'm not sure the difference between Iglesias and Martin is significant.

I already basically said what you just wrote above.

I'm trying hard to care less, so I'll leave the bait alone.
