No, the age factor is why they were available. The guys in their early 20's are either being protected, or they are HS draft picks that haven't advanced far out of the lower levels, which usually means they aren't worth being taken.

...

These are two of the most ML ready pitchers I've seen taken in a while, if you can pluck guys like this for free and they end up being a decent BP piece at a negligible salary you are winning. Even better if one turns out to be able to eat some SP innings.

Feels like they wanted these guys, not to be good, but to add depth to the options to eat innings....in lieu of giving some other end-of-the-market guy 2M.

If they are impact guys that would be unique because they can't make the 40 on another team.

I'd say more like lottery tickets. It's not that they don't have a little potential left, there is some bright side with each, but other teams were forced to carry them on the ML roster because of service time, so especially if a club close to contention, you don't want to waste that space on a guy that has a small shred of potential. We have been in that bind a few times...but being a disaster of a team, we have more room to cut fat and take the chance. Look at our 40 man, if we were closer to a contending team, we would have some spots we could trim, and a couple of those potential guys would have been squeezed out.

It's not like they were FA anyone could have signed yet, we got them before someone took a shot on them.

But not like they are stellar prospects without some issues either. in our position, totally worth taking a look and seeing if that one real good looking trait can be fleshed out to a ML pitcher. If not, costs us nothing.
