MIAA Quarterfinals

St Frances 80 Glenelg Country 56
Mt St Joe 65 Pallotti 63
Spalding 89 Gilman 85
John Carroll 57 Boyls Latin 54

Three quarterfinal games come down to the final minute. In the end, the results mirrored the dominance the Red Division held on the Black Division during the regular season, with the four game sweep pushing the Red to a 38-15 overall record v the Black this season, including it’s top six (of seven) teams posting a commanding 37-9 record versus the Red.

Watched the Gilman-Spalding game. This game was lost on coaching alone. Spalding’s coach scouted Gilman very well, and Cam Whitmore abused Roman Hinds for Gilman. Gilman for some ungodly reason, decided to play man to man for pretty much the entire game. Whitmore just destroyed Hinds off the dribble. He had over 30, was actually 21-22 from the free throw line. Even with all of this Gilman had their chances to win this game. Their guards were spectacular. Winborne had 29, Foster had 21 but would foul out with about 2 mins left, which killed them. They missed a wide open three pointer by Matt Cooper to tie it, and Winborne missed two free throws that would have cut game to one. Spalding hit their free throws.

All and all, was a very good season for Gilman, seeing that they only had Malik Missouri for 4 games. Winborne should be All Metro this year, he was dynamic all year long.

I saw most of the last quarter. Every time Gilman made a run, Spalding answered. They cut it to 1, Spalding would push it to 9. Spalding had a 10 point lead with just over 2 minutes left. A horrible inbounds led to that wide open look from 3. Whitmore’s dunk over Hinds was crazy.

That was pretty much how the whole game went. They started the game up 11-0, all on drives by their two big men, and one three pointer by Whitmore. Gilman plays a little bit of zone, get back into the game and decided that they should go back into man to man. Just made no sense. That dunk was definitely sick. Jalen Marshall’s missed layup, that would have cut it to one, hurt big time as well.

I saw Whitmore play two years ago, he’s continued to get better. Very bright future. Both teams will be very good next year. Spalding’s guards are lackluster, but they have really good size and a great player in Whitmore. If Missouri can come back and take the next step next year, Gilman will be right there the running for tops in the league. Especially with SFA losing Ace and West.

Yes, and Spalding is young too, they bring back basically their whole roster. The Cavs top four scorers are all sophomores. John Carroll is very young, as well.

St Frances moved up a spot in today’s Max Preps Top 25, from #13 to #12, while Poly climbed up four spots to #18, their highest ranking in school history.

If you are at Poly and City theres no need to go to SFA

City and Poly are playing for the jv championship next week pretty much assuring that the varsities will be reloading next year. Poly loses 12 seniors this year so their climb will be steeper but both programs look pretty strong right now.

The Panthers look to be the first to win back-to-back MIAA titles since 2012, when they face the Gaels on Sunday. 2012 saw the fourth straight back-to-back title sweep in the MIAA when John Carroll accomplished the feat. The Gaels won in ‘05 & ‘06, Towson Catholic in ‘07 & ‘08, the Panthers in ‘09 & ‘10, and JC in ‘11 & ‘12.

They adjust the playoffs so that a re-seed occurs before the quarterfinals, but don’t do away with the split region, which negates re-seed improvement. C’mon, bro’.

The top city school teams play each other just once in the regular season. A big - C’mon, bro’.

Baltimore City has a league championship, as does Baltimore County and Anne Arundel County. Howard County does not. C’mon, bro’.

Mt St Joe is on their way to the MIAA title. Still, no repeat since 2012.

Gaels win, 76-63. Edokpayi led the Gaels with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Brelsford, Crawley, and Stines, each added 16 points. Baldwin scored 25 for the Panthers, while West added 15. The Gaels jumped on the Panthers early, staking a 21-7 lead after one quarter. The Gaels led by 16, 58-42, heading into the fourth quarter, before the Panthers opened the stanza with a 16-6 run, to cut it to 6. The Gaels flipped that momentum with a 10-1 run to put the defending champs away.

So much for that ranking, game wasn’t really even close.

Losing Toles and Banks was huge. With them, they had a shot at the Triple Crown - MIAA, BCL, and Alhambra. If you are 33-3 and beat the #2 team in the country, the ranking comes with the territory. Great win for St Joe.
