A bit off-topic....I'm curious to know how The Athletic is doing financially, with it's subscription-only model, since that is where so much high-quality written content seems to have migrated. Are people willing to eventually pay for something they were getting for free for so long, once the quality has degraded just about everywhere else? (The Ringer is still good reading though)

(I ask as someone who does not currently subscribe to The Athletic, but a couple years ago I signed up for the premium version of Spotify, after probably a decade of not paying a dime for music, and I find it's well worth the cost.)

Are you a prime member? If so I recommend getting amazon music. Same thing but cheaper for prime members.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

It's a bit early to tell...but the next few months should tell more. Because of the way the model was set up, one year deals, it's not the first year that tells a picture because everyone was getting a discount rate. The question is when they have to renew...if they have to do it at double the price, they are going to lose a lot, how much is what the question is. After that initial wave of subscribers, another batch came through as they expanded service (I signed up in this window), when THAT window ends...you are looking at the real test for them, that's when the rush they got is facing higher fees, they lose a ton because of that...or do they adapt and offer discounted rates for renewal as well.

Been watching them closely from a financial POV, I'm intrigued when new models crop up.

LOL, Paul Maidment resigns as Editorial Director of G/O Media.

The death of Deadspin has several parallels with the end of KSK four years ago, right down to the half-assed effort by management to run the site on its own without founding writers and falling on its face within a week

On the one hand, it's amazing to see someone with as little self-awareness as the person writing this letter. On the other, said letter-writer is known odoriferous vegetation, so it isn't that surprising at all.
