You are making an assumption that they don't go out and sign a replacement for close to expected performance for less money

Where are they getting a .800 OPS 4 WAR guy for less money? With all due respect, their replacement will be a rule 5 20ish year old Dominican with a good glove thats an automatic out similar to Martin last year. And all for the minimum!

I'm not even sure he'll want to come back here after all this. Obviously I can't speak for him, but the O's might have just done him a favor and given him the opportunity to sign with an actual decent team.

Agreed.

Agreed.

I think money will have a lot to do with it. The Orioles don't appear to want to spend any money. They don't care about winning and would benefit from a .500 OPS 20 year old rule 5 from the Dominican playing for the minimum.

I would offer him 18 million over 3 years. Considering the market is saturated with middle infielders, he likes playing on the team, and he will be a starter.

IF Villar was such a hot commodity how come nobody picked him up? Apparently 30 teams think he isn't worth his expected arb number and would prefer to go after him in FA.

The market is saturated with middle infielders, his arb number is high, and Elias tipped his hand when he told the Sun they werent going to pay him. They can sign him once he clears for less and give up zippo!

Completely not the point.

Orioles are slashing payroll with zero care for the on field product is the point.

If you're cool with that, then cool. But I'm not.

I don’t understand why people can’t grasp the issue here.

All of these scenarios and cliches people are throwing out there are completely meaningless.

This is about greed. That’s it. Nothing else.

Agreed

Here's another slap at the Orioles

Villar is 28, played all 162 games in 2019, and is fresh off an excellent season in Baltimore, the team that waived him last week. He shouldn’t be an option here, but why would the Orioles pay good players their worth when they can, instead, pay bad players so much less?

For...uh, this guy.

14th round pick last year, lefty starter in SS-A ball.

The Giants non-tendered Kevin Pillar, who was arguably their best player after being acquired from Toronto in early April.

He was, alas, also projected to fetch some $9.7 million in arbitration this offseason.

Because you don't spend $10M for a guy you can get cheaper after he becomes a free agent
