I nominate JJ Hardy sliding across the plate just ahead of the tag, with Cruz doing a backwards somersault in the background.

I nominate Ed Reed throwing an ill-advised lateral.

I don't care which. You have like 9 to choose from.

Sorry to ruin your day fellas. A Coast Guard Cutter named in Taney's honor that is 1,000 times larger is still on display at Pier 5. Also a national historic landmark. No one knows that though. Probably not even the Governor.

That little statue though. Lol. Moral victories.

Are national historic landmarks exempt from this?

Thats my point. It's a half-hearted gesture that is getting praise. No one knew who Roger Taney was 2 weeks ago. But this is some milestone day all of a sudden.

Are they supposed to go and sink the last ship that didn't sink during the attacks on Pearl Harbor in the name of erasing history? Or can we accept that in hindsight there were some shitty people that existed 150-200 years ago and move on to things that really matter, instead of half assing "change"?

Yea shitty people existed. Or people that existed symbolize shitty beliefs.

Taking these statues down doesn't really harm anyone. Does it affect actual change? Maybe not. But it can't hurt.

A black person walking down the street with his young child doesn't need to look at a statue of Robert E Lee.

Good luck with that.

Someone started a movement in Baltimore literally asking for no killing for 72 hours. It lasted barely a day. Which actually is a start.

Erasing some history though. Yeah, that'll make the world right.

This rant isn't aimed at people here, or groups of people. Aimed mainly at politicians and misaligned priorities. They can order to tear down some statues and say "look what I got done" in their next campaign for re-election (even if they don't know jack about a big ass CG cutter docked in the harbor). Or they can use their reach to aid in things like Ceasefire, rather than rely 6 people on FB trying to spread the word.

Rant over

How does Robert E. Lee get a statue in Baltimore in the first place?

Participation trophies apparently have a long history.

You keep saying erase history. No one is erasing history. Germans will always know the Nazi's had power yet there are no statues. The Sunni, Kurds and Shia will always know that in Iraq there was Saddam Hussein yes I ripped down some statues. You put up monuments of events or catastrophes that happen. Not of the people that made them happen like 9/11. Guess who's 1994 Porsche this was in Iraq.

Editing this in because it needs to said. Will it erase biggotry, hate and murder rates no. It is a small start and you have to start somewhere.

Shoulda kept that statue of Saddam up. History, and all. Do books not exist? Did Gore uninvent the internet?

THIS. RIGHT. HERE.

Taking down monuments takes literally hours. Stop comparing it to lowering murder rates, which, while a very pressing issue, takes a lot more planning and strategy.

Lots of good points being made.

It's absolutely not erasing history. Preserving history is not the point of a statue. The actual reason why many of these confederate statues were erected is interesting, but I'll leave it at that.

Slavery and the Civil War are prominently featured in public schools curriculum, in pop culture (movies, shows, books, etc), and we have places like museums, battle ground sites, plantations, underground railroad sites, and so on where people can visit and learn, evaluate, and reflect on our history.

Btw, Germany has done a really good job from what I understand with dealing with Nazism. They preserve certain sites relating to it and that era in their history, but they ban the symbols and don't have statues of Hitler and other prominent Nazi's all over the place.
