Look back a couple of years ago. Looked to me, but what do I know, that the second half the season Manny was trying to hit HRs to the detriment of the team. It didn't "feel' anything like an approach to help them win but an attempt to pad his stats to get to 40. Could be totally off base but that was the impression I got watching him night after night.
Now I have no doubt that the analytics point to hitting HRs as an improved method to winning. But I think its rooted deeper than that. The average MLB player is younger than both my kids. I know how they played video games. And I saw them try (they weren't that good at baseball) to emulate that when they played little league.
