The Ravens official site made it pretty obvious the Bethel move is likely for comp pick purposes:

"The Ravens have waived defensive back/special teams ace Justin Bethel, a move that likely gives Baltimore a fourth-round compensatory pick in next year’s draft.  Bethel had a team-leading six special teams tackles this season and was one of the Ravens’ best players on special teams after being signed as a free agent in March.  However, when the Tennessee Titans cut former Ravens defensive end Brent Urban over the weekend, it took away the fourth-round compensatory pick the Ravens acquired for losing wide receiver John Brown during free agency."

Yep, Harbaugh made it clear that it was because of the comp pick.  He called Bethel the best ST player in the league.

He probably gets signed by the Pats or Browns shortly

Im surprised they would value a 4th round pick over a very good ST player at this point in the season. I wonder if they have a trade brewing?

The Ravens down to 51 on the 53 man roster.  Something is going to happen.

No way he likes it..not with the way he values ST.

Just wonder if he was involved in the decision to do it.

As a former special team coach, he definitely hates the move.   But EDC is valuing a 4th rounder higher than Bethel.

EDC has said, numerous times, that, he is in the "pick business."

EDC IMO, clearly made this decision.  I think it is the correct one.

Look for a rule change in the next CBA.  No way the players union likes guys getting cut so teams can save a pick.

The thing that worries me is who Harbs will use to replace Bethel.  I have seen Humphrey on punt coverage.  that to me is a bad idea.

I think Jaleel Scott may be the guy who becomes the gunner

Jeff z:

Culley said he feels like rookie WR Miles Boykin got a little bogged down when team started adding more and more stuff to playbook. Felt he was thinking too much. But Culley has seen signs last 2 wks of Boykin pulling out of it and settling in.

I agree with what you said yesterday... if you are trying to win this year, and you value Bethel as the best Special Teams player in the game... think you need to keep him vs. getting the 4th comp.

To be fair, that pick will probably have a great chance of making the roster, and will be at salary they control and can manage for sometime.

Whenever another team does this I usually shrug and say whatever. But when the Pats do this, it just seems fishy. I almost wonder what kind of information he can pass the coaches before next week.

Friend of mine brought that up today.

My response was simple...if they stop Lamar, they win...if they don’t, they won’t.

I don’t think Bethel does anything to change that.

NE values ST and he is really good. Sure, they may want some insider knowledge but I don’t think that’s the only reason they signed him. Their ST is 14th according to DVOA, so they could improve there.

Speaking of DVOA..Ravens are up to 7th.

6th in Offense, 18th in Defense and 3rd in ST.

That's an incredible climb for the defense which was pretty far down the list. After the Cleveland game the raw defense score was +9.4, it's now +0.8. A rating of -8.6% which is the change from the last 2 weeks would be good for the 5th best overall DVOA on the league. And they did so against the 5th best offense in DVOA in that mix. And all in all, the Cinci game was a relative nothing burger without a lot of sacks or turnovers.

I think they were 27th or 28th in DVOA heading into the Cincy game.
