Something about this post makes me think this is a done deal.

Elias says he'll start in the GCL to get the rust off, and then move to Aberdeen pretty quickly.

Pretty consistent trend of the new management liking to start guys at lower levels and then move them up once they have success.  Not talking about the stint at GCL, that's fine no matter what, but short-season Aberdeen for an advanced college bat is definitely on the tame side in terms of challenging him in his initial foray into professional experience.  Rutschman's teammate in 2018 who went top-5 (Nick Madrigal) did a similar refresher in the rookie league, then spent two weeks in low-a (not short season like Aberdeen, just low like Delmarva) before moving up to the Carolina league for August.  On the other hand, 2018 #2 overall pick Joey Bart spent the entirety of his first pro season at short season.

I'm not saying it is a good or bad thing.  Just that I definitely think it's a conscious decision from this group of player development people.

As I pointed out in my article, the recent trend suggested he would start in Aberdeen. The GCL seems to be a bit ridiculous but he will probably be there for just a few games.

Aberdeen is still too low imo.

Somebody asked Elias why Aberdeen...  he basically said he likes to start guys low, because it's easier to move them up than move them down.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that.

I am not surprised he is starting at Aberdeen, and IMO, not a big deal.  We have complained for years about the oganizations, inability to develop players.  The Orioles have a new staff, fine with letting them do it their way.

Maybe he didn't have a say on where Bregman would start but Bregman started in low A (Delmarva level).

I would guess he starts next year in Frederick, moves quickly to Bowie, and is in position for a major-league callup by August. They may choose not to do so, as you said, because they're not good, but in terms of his readiness, I'll be shocked if he doesn't blitz his way through the low minors to double-A.

Just that Adley is very advanced so if you are basing promotion on his ability to handle each level, he should be up very fast.

If they want him to get a certain amount of experience at different levels, or just don't want to waste service time when we are terrible then that will probably delay things.

This seems akin to Kyle Boller throwing 65 yards through the uprights from one knee.

You'll be sorry you doubted him the next time there's a power failure while a runner's trying to steal second.

Now they just need to scout for a middle infielder who can catch the throw in the dark...
