According to the Orioles, they have claimed INF Hanser Alberto off waivers from the New York Yankees and designated C Andrew Susac for assignment. The Orioles currently have 40 players on the 40-man roster.

Oh yeah ....  330 BA with a 346 OBP is some serious skill.

26 years old, 2,740 Minor League Ab's...

As CA-Oriole said, coming off a 2018 season where in 101 games at AAA (PCL), he slashed .330 / .346 / .452 (.797) over 361 ab's.

Obviously take PCL offensive numbers with a grain of salt, but will be interesting to see how he looks in the Spring.

Between this and a few other reports, sounds like his calling card has always been his glove. Flashes a strong glove in camp, could certainly be in the UTI mix.

They need another utility player on the roster, with the current unknown state of the starters.

Any time we are dumping Duquette's garbage, it's a good thing.

Hard to tell if comments in this thread are serious.

What's hard to determine?  He looks like to have a decent chance to compete for the UTI spot on the roster.

Why would anyone care about a player competing for a UTI spot on the roster.

There is a large range between noting and caring.  You are intelligent enough to discern the difference.

That's not really an answer.

There is no relevance to Utility players on this team.  None.

The only reason to care about him is you think there's something unlocked in there and he goes Angenio Suarez or Jose Ramirez on you....becomes a consequential player that you sign cheaply enough that he has trade value.

The guy already has 2+ years of service.

We don't need 'development' of the bottom half of the roster because those guys are available anytime you want them.

Chris Owings would make an excellent utility player on a competitive team.

No, it's an answer you don't like, because your mo is going to continue to be that, "Rebuilding is just an excuse to condone losing."  Frankly, it's fine that you believe that. You are welcome to state that as often as you want.

No one is going to disagree with your strawman argument that an inconsequential move on a team with zero chance of contention doesn't 'matter.'

However, it's fine to discuss / note such moves.

Alberto is a bit older, with probably inflated offensive numbers in the PCL... and best case for him is probably contending for a UTI job on a team which doesn't figure to be good.  We all realize what it is, it's fine to discuss it within that vacuum.

Well the first comment was "...that is some serious skill"

Your comment was that it will be "...interesting to see how he looks"

b55 thinks switching out one meaningless player from DD for a meaningless player from ME is "a good thing".

Yes, it will be interesting to see how he looks.  If he can be in the mix for the UTI job, I'm interested in that.

It's okay if you are not.

He'll be the first one off the 40 man when the Orioles sign a FA.  The Orioles like the Yankees will see if they can stash him without another team claiming him.

Having role players making no money that contribute to a team is a good thing.

Why anyone is arguing with that obvious point is beyond me.

Maybe we can make him part of a 7 team trade so that we can get together distant cousins on the same team?!?

Unsurprisingly, you missed it.  Contribute what?

Interesting that you continue to mock something you fail to understand, meanwhile, the only 2 teams remaining in the Machado finals are both trying to do 'that'.
