BSL: Mike Locksley To Be Named Head Coach

The Terrapins have found their man. For the third time, Locksley will be a member of the coaching staff in College Park, this time as its leader.

Will he bring Jalen Hurts with him is the question.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"Now OPS sucks.  Got it."

"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

Finish Cole and other things you can control.

Patch up relationships with current players and local schools.

Get the Alumni and Boosters involved and excited.

Go from outright 2019 recruiting disaster to salvaging something.

Put up strong classes in 2020-22.

Evaluate where you are at end of '22.

Keith Cavanaugh saying a lot of former players are contacting Locksley about possibly joining the staff.

With the early signing day approaching, something to watch will be if some of the best locals committed elsewhere don't sign that day.

As good a hire as could be hoped for. Hopefully he can do good things here.

McMurphy article says he will stay at Alabama throughout their Playoff run. That doesn't bode well for salvaging something (anything) for the 2019 recruiting class.

Are there any rules regarding him recruiting for Maryland while still working for Alabama?

How much contact are coaches allowed to have with recruits currently?

Basically, is it possible for Locksley to more or less do everything recruiting wise he could as solely the MD head coach over the next month as he will be able to do pulling double duty as the Alabama OC and MD head coach?

No, just question of time.

Also, if he is staying through the CFP...probably not flipping anyone committed to Bama.

Yeah, no rules against it....but it's hard to be in a kid's living room in PG County trying to convince him to consider UM (when he hadn't given it a passing thought before you took the job) while you are also in Tuscaloosa trying to prepare for a game that's kinda, sorta important. And I thought Saban usually parted ways with his assistants that took other jobs before the postseason....which says to me that he's received a solid commitment from Locksley with regard to how much time he will be present to put into Alabama's preparations. (assuming of course that the rumors are true that Locksley will stay there until after the Playoff)

There is a "dead period" in which there is no contact with recruits that starts on Dec 17th. I don't know what Alabama's practice schedule looks like in preparation for the semifinal, but there won't be any kind of recruiting going on after that until January. That can be good or bad for Locksley/UM, depending on the perspective.

EDIT: This doesn't even touch on the subject of how much time he'll have to hire a staff before Alabama releases him.

Yeah....not that there was much chance anyway, but Shane Lee is pretty much out of the question now.

Sounds like he's already got a pretty good idea of who he wants on his staff. Most expecting him to essentially clean house, but obviously would want to keep Abdul-Rahim, Beatty, and Mencarini in some capacity. Rumors swirling that Larry Johnson could be coming on board as defensive coordinator from Ohio State, which would add yet another elite DMV recruiter to the staff.

One glance at Twitter shows you why hiring Locksley was absolutely the right move. Everyone from former players, former staff, current players, recruits, and high school coaches are gushing over the hire. He hasn't even had the job for a full day and his impact is already being felt across the local football landscape.

Roman Stubbs reporting that the deal is for 5 years, with an option for 6, at about $2.5 million per year.

AAR, Beatty and Larry Johnson working under Locksley is pretty much the Dream Team when it comes to DMV recruiting. If that group could stay together long enough to sign  2-3 classes, I'd at least imagine they'd win 6 games a season on talent alone.

Sounds like Nick Saban is going after Abdul-Rahim pretty hard.

This is actually a pretty great question.

I was asking, man, if this had been done sooner, would Haskins be here vs Ohio? But if they've got two great QB at Bama, would one be willing to come with Lox out this way?

Haskins would absolutely be here if they had hired Locksley instead of Durkin. Chase Young would also be here.
