If it's all equal, the brothers will almost certainly opt for Florida over Maryland. This isn't good.

Can't do anything about it if the Marlins max out their space. I don't know how much us or them have spent on the dozen or so guys each team has signed. If they haven't spent a lot more than us, then they can definitely acquire more pool money than we can since they started with more. I agree that all else equal, the Cuban players seem likely to sign in Miami.

Should still end up with Gaston in that case.

And might still have a play for Victor Jr if we want to throw a lot of money at him. Marlins are gonna have to match or come close to our offer for Victor Victor. So if they pay $5.5M of their $6M to the elder Mesa, we can offer the younger $2M and Gaston $4M or something like that. I have no idea where the financial line is for the brothers in terms of how much more they'd have to get to make it worth splitting up.

Actually, there is.  I've suggested it and you've indicated you think it's too confusing.

There is real value to the Marlins to have the Orioles out of the way.  It may be too much yesterday because the Marlins may feel at this point they can get it done and the Orioles don't matter.  Likely costs them some more money but they may not care at this point.

Sometimes you need to be smart enough to understand where you get your value.

Your plan doesn't get us any more value. Just different value. We either trade them enough money so they can get all 3 and we get some prospect or maybe they get the Mesas and we get Gaston. You've made no indication that the guy wed get from them is better/worse/different than Gaston.

Reading Kubatko today, he indicates VV Mesa is rated behind Diaz by pro scouts and that the Orioles are quite happy with their organizational OF depth. He also indicated the Cuban 3 could hold off signing until more teams are involved next July. I think it's foolish to hang my hat on these guys and think they are some sort of master plan for a rebuild.

You are now actively refusing to understand how this works.

It is use it or lose it money. It doesn't need to be a good value. You either sign these guys or you get nobody. There are no players left in the class worth big money.

These guys don't define the rebuild in any way. They simply are available for no cost besides international space which is disappearing once they are gone anyways.

Gaston sounds like a reasonable consolation prize. At this point just make the Marlins pay.

Marlins expected to announce signing today.

The futility continues. They're going to be left with bonus signing money they can't even use.

Sandy Gaston could be the real winner here.

Well that's pretty rude. Don't the Mesa brothers know we gave away half our team for them?

Wonder if the Os offered 6M or something like that?

All that international money is now wasted. Gone. What a pathetic organization.

I’m not terribly upset - VVM sounds like an OK prospect, but he doesn’t sound like an elite, game changing talent.

Of course, it’d be better to have him than not having him, but oh well.

There are 2 arguments here

Argument 1:

We lost out on a potentially decent talent. A solid regular who will make very little money for a while but he’s not some great prospect that is heartbreaking to lose.

Argument 2:

You essentially put all your eggs in this basket..and, in true Oriole fashion, you failed. And, you dealt 750k of potential game changing money for a nothing player.

Both arguments are true...to me, the second argument is the bigger deal because of what you did at the deadline and what your stated goals have been. More of the same for the worst franchise in the sport.

I'm upset they gave away $ to Philly, thus lowering their chances.

As BaltBird says above, it's not about VVM being over-the-top elite... it's about it was a chance to add a guy who would have been a Top 3 prospect in system.

Oh well.  Get Gaston, and any other guys that are remaining...

Lets sign Gaston and see if he can pitch without the PED's.
