Connolly is right, if it doesn't happen now, hard to imagine it ever will.

The man who replaced him at SS has a great chance to be the manager.  Brady and him are close friends.  Has the respect of the Angelos family.

Teams needs and wants to get back to development, building a farm system, etc...

These are all things I would peg Cal to be good at.

Uggh. Accumulating Ex-Orioles has its place but it's not building a baseball team.

You have no idea if it is or not.

We just don't know.

However, if a "team of Orioles" is what it takes for them to have full autonomy and ownership butts out, that would easily be whats best for us.

End of the day, if the new GM "group" doesn't have full autonomy, it won't matter who has the job.

Yep, I agree completely.

I'll take the one of the worst baseball minds in the sport with complete autonomy over the best baseball minds in the sport working under the same old Angelos constraints.

Obviously best case would be a brilliant mind working without any strings.  But I think the limitations that are placed by those strings are far more damaging to the organization than the limitations in skills and ideas of our past GMs or potential future GMs.

Building a legit farm system is #1 on the list of things that MUST happen.

Cal would know and understand that.  He would understand teaching, developing, etc...That is important and something this system lacks.

Now, would he be able to implement it and things like that?  Who the hell knows.

So who is doing the interviewing? Brady? Graham? John? Lewis? Would be nice to know what the mechanism is in place.

When Duquette was hired by the O’s, he had met with the hiring committee of Showalter, General Counsel Russell Smouse, and Lou Angelos.  Presumably John would also be part of the committee this time around.

But who they would bring into fill the Buck spot in that room is an interesting question.

Supposedly there is going to be a traditional front office structure - Team president, GM and then your manager.

Ripken could be a team president similar to how Nolan Ryan was for the Rangers.

He could then hire somebody that would know more about analytics to be a GM.

From his interviews though, I'm not so sure how he would be as an executive vs. how he was as a player.  Two different skill sets.

When the article said Cal was 58, I came that much closer to death.

In that case, you should know that today is Jim Palmer's 73rd birthday.

35 years ago today, Scott McGregor pitched a complete-game shutout, Cal Ripken Jr., caught a soft liner at the Vet and the Orioles won the World Series. Little did we know then, that was the last time they'd be in it after appearing 6 times in 17 years.

Also, Cal is suing the city of Aberdeen over the stadium deal, so it might be kind of awkward for him to work for the Orioles.
