Strikeouts have gone up a ton in that same time range. 16.8% of PA in 2002 to 22.3% in 2018. So a more than 30% increase in K's has only driven a 5% increase it pitches per batter.

What has happened to walk rates?  strike%?  Any idea?

If that's overall through all of MLB remember that a RP that comes in and is very efficient, will balance out a high strikeout starter. So that will toy with the numbers a little bit.

I did notice that a lot of the high strikeout guys were all near the top of pitches per inning, Kershaw, Verlander, Giolito etc. whether it directly correlates or not. :/

This is one of those little project ideas I'd usually through over to Jeff Long and have him do some research, but now that he went and got all popular and has a ton of work to do I can't do that anymore :/ I miss Jeff.

Yeah but that's all pitchers, so it gives you all the starters, not just the RP that I was looking for.

A lot of this has to be on the mind of people, think of all the talk about adding a new name and stat tracked for "openers".

Sidenote can we trade for Sorotka and his 6.00 GB/FB ratio?? Holy crap! Can't give up home runs on ground balls.

Both seem pretty steady year to year.

Walk rate down 8.7% in '02 to 8.5% in '18.
Strike% up from 62.4% to 63.7%

Which would make you think pitchers are more efficient nowadays.

BTW the Fangraphs leaders board is the tool I used to gather all of the stats I've posted, with a small amount of additional math like dividing pitches by batters to get pitches/batter.

You can make custom stat pages from like a hundred different stats, pick a year or range of years (summed up or split into individual seasons) and get stats for individuals, teams, or leagues. Can also apply splits like only SP or only RP.

For context of the International League this year:

@TidesNotes

“Keegan Akin enters play tied for third in the IL with 80 strikeouts - eight shy of Rochester’s Lewis Thorpe’s league-leading 88 punchouts. Akin, the #6 prospect in the #Orioles system, also ranks among qualifying IL pitchers in ERA (5th, 4.29) and average against (5th, .256).”

The walks are still an issue. They are holding him back from coming to the majors imo.

Hasn't pitched since the 15th but doesn’t appear to be on the injured list. Managing innings?

Definitely seems like they are limiting him to try and keep him under some innings number they have in mind.

Only at 87 for the year after last night and he threw nearly 140 last season.  So doesn't seem like he's on too aggressive of a pace to me, but it's ok to be cautious.

Balt Sun: Orioles prospect Keegan Akin dominated at Double-A. He’s been forced to remake himself at the next level.
