MLB Pipeline:

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

Illinois left-hander Tyler Jay went from dominating with Team USA in 2014 to the No. 6 overall pick in 2015. Now the Illini have another pitcher prepared to use a summer breakout as a springboard to the early rounds of the Draft. Sedlock starred in the Cape Cod League while transitioning from the bullpen to the rotation, then earned Big Ten Conference pitcher of the year honors and set a school strikeout record this spring, fanning 116 in 101 1/3 innings to surpass former first-rounder John Ericks' mark.

Though Sedlock was primarily a reliever on a deep Illinois pitching staff in his first two college seasons, he has all of the ingredients to start. He throws four pitches, fills the strike zone, generates a lot of groundouts and has a strong 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame.

Sedlock's best pitch is his heavy sinker, which sits at 91-93 mph when he starts and can reach 96 in shorter stints. He also can miss bats with his low-80s slider. Sedlock's curveball and changeup aren't as effective, but they have their moments as well.

Callis was saying that he went from the pen to the rotation.
And scouts were impressed that they didn't see any drop off in his stuff.

I think you have to like this pick based on what others think about this kid and how he could move quickly.

There is some question about his third pitch.

So we've finally drafted someone who could possibly belong where we drafted him? Obviously I know nothing about this guy except for what I've read here, but he sounds like a decent get. Love those guys who throw a hard, heavy sinker.

I think the Orioles could have made a better pick but I don't think this is a bad pick.

Seems hard to have much of an opinion either way.

They got a talented college arm that many had projected in the range he was selected. Doesn't seem like they reached.

Now we will see what happens development wise.

Figure Frederick to start '17, should end the year at Bowie if things go well.

When I say that, I base that on rankings and a preference for college bats.

That said, I like that they took someone who could move fast.

He's probably a better hitter than Stewart already.
