Michigan the betting favorite to win National title. In Harbaugh's 2nd year. Is there still people here who want to argue he isn't the superior Harbaugh coach.

Would have to see John in other environments before I had strong feelings one way or the other, but don't see why Jim should be considered superior just because he has succeeded in multiple spots...  meaning it's a credit to Jim that he has, but it's not a discredit to John, that John hasn't had the opportunity.

Keeping this to college and Michigan... they are loaded in a number of areas... and yeah, their path is easier than Alabama's... but Alabama is better overall imo, and Clemson has a better path than Michigan imo.

Jim Harbaugh is a coaching genius. John is clearly not that

I'd take John to coach a pro team. Jim to coach college team.

I think Jim is the better pure coach, but he can't go more than a few years without alienating the people you need on your side in order to remain a good team. That's obviously less of a concern in NCAA, I think he can have longer term success there than he did in SF or would at any other NFL gig.

So you think John could have walked into that Michigan program last year and had them as the betting favs this preseason. This isn't even an indictment on or dig at John. It's about how amazing Jim is as a coach

I don't know.  It's fair to say that Jim is capable of walking in to different situations at the college and professional level and having success. He's had the opportunity to do so, and he's done well. That's a credit to him.  John not having had the same opportunities doesn't mean he wouldn't be capable of the same.

Take nothing away from Harbaugh (Jim) but that Michigan is a playoff contender in his 2nd season is as much a testament to the fact that he inherited a talented, name-brand program that had mostly been underachieving for many years. The cupboard was much barer at Stanford when he got there, and it wasn't until his 3rd season that they even got into a bowl game, 4 until they were nationally relevant. That's still impressive, but also an illustration that there is a larger perspective than just one coach.

As for Jim vs John, I think both are where they ought to be right now (college vs NFL) to get the most out of their abilities and personalities. Jim might do better than John if he went back to the NFL in the short term, but I think Jim would quickly wear out his welcome too, and your team would have to start over again.

In a lot of ways John still has to prove himself with "his team". Fair or not, strong lockerroom presences like Reed, Ray, Q had a lot of influence and got a lot of credit for our outstanding run from '08-'12. Since those guys left we're a sub .500 football team. This year tells me a lot about Harbaugh.
