Watched him down in Norfolk before he got hot. Loved what I saw. Quick bat, finished through, makes hard contact, moves the ball to all fields. His numbers aren't just meme tier BS, he's legitimately a good prospect and a fantastic bat

Who also doesn't walk, which makes him very vulnerable at this level IMO.

Yep, it's a concern for sure.  Also a concern with Hays, which I think caught up with him last season in addition to his injury struggles.

I haven't seen Mountcastle hit much outside of some highlights and a little spring training.  It's possible that his lack of walks is different than Hays.  With Hays you can watch just a few at bats and see that he takes wild swings at everything that will not likely be sustainable at higher levels.  I don't know if Mountcastle is the same, or if his is a more restrained aggression, which would be less of a red flag.

To Mountcastle's credit, he made improvements last year, walk rate up to 6%.  Was just over 4% prior to that.

It's not like Nunez has a lock on the DH spot. He's been dreadful the last month.

Make the move.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

I would hope DJ would be ahead of him.   Right now he is a better hitter.

Maybe. Stewart is actually a few months older than Nunez.

I'm certainly good with the idea that Nunez isn't good enough you have to old a spot for him.  Do think there is some ability there though.

If we're no longer concerned with Mountcastle's defense (ie his future is DH and 1st...maybe LF)... than the only considerations here are his BB/K ratio, and service time, no?

Know the offensive numbers are up across the board in the Minors, but that line is pretty hard to ignore.

I don't think he's quite the wild swinger that Hays is, so a low walk rate isn't as huge of a concern for him as it is with Hays, IMO.  Still, its a definite red flag.  He improved to 6% last year in Bowie, but this year it's under 4%.  Approach is as big of a factor as actual walks drawn so far, it's possible he's got a good approach and sense of the strike zone but just doesn't draw many walks, kind of like Trey Mancini.

Nothing wrong with his K's, just a concern that he can't draw a free pass.

For a point of comparison, our favorite free-swingers Adam Jones and Jonathan Schoop were each 1-2 years younger at every level than Mountcastle and they each walked over 7% of the time in the minors.  Mountcastle is at 4.5% of the time.

Back in the lineup tonight after getting a cortisone shot in his left wrist a couple days ago. Hopefully that doesn’t become a lingering issue for the rest of the season.

Would love to know from those who've seen more of him if he has a Trey Mancini approach, where he is selective and approaches at bats well but just doesn't draw many walks, or if he has an Austin Hays approach, where he swings crazy aggressively at everything and (IMO) is absolutely unsustainable at the MLB level.

Nothing wrong with swinging a ton when you hit 330 with power.  But he needs to be able to be a bit more selective when that falls to a more MLB-realistic average against better competition.  Not walking in the minors is a concern, but doesn't necessarily mean he has a bad approach that will limit his potential upside at the plate.
