Hence why it's an Olympic footnote while the World Cup is a major event.

Closing ceremony now over....   the Olympics overall has issues, Brazil has issues....  but the Olympics always sucks me in.

In a world full of a lot of misery, and just horribleness....  you see a lot of examples of the best of humanity.

Caught a lot of coverage of a lot of different events. Really enjoyed it.

How do soccer fans feel about penalty kicks? Seems...too easy for the shooter. The goalie having to guess? Why not move it to the back of the box, or make the shooter dribble it in like a hockey penalty shot?

Ought to be golden goal rules. Play until someone scores.

(On my phone, "scores" originally autocorrected to "dies", which is quite the Freudian slip, but also probably appropriate for some matches.)

Penalty kicks is kind of like settling a football game by having (non-kicker) players from each team try field goals from (old) extra-point distance.

Golden goal and if you need to remove a player or two to open up the field. Shootout is horrible

A game could take 6, 7, 24 hours if you play like sudden death :)

Crabcakes and Olympic golds, that's what Maryland does
If Maryland were its own country, it'd have finished 6th on the medal count. Athletes from the Old Line State won a whopping 14 gold medals at the Games - with 10 coming from Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky. Helen Maroulis, Angel McCoughtry, Kyle Snyder, Kevin Durant and Jack Conger - yeah, that one - were the others. (MD will bring home 15 golds, but Conger and Phelps won one in the same event.) Though it's an inexact science determining hometowns of Olympic athletes, it's believed that Maryland finished third among all 50 states behind California and Florida.
I guess Matt Centrowitz finishing first in the 1500 meters doesn't count?  I mean, it's the first gold by a US runner in the event since 1908 and the 1500 is one of the premiere events of track.  Pretty poor omission.

You can bet on the numbers, or you can bet on Buck Showalter.

The Pac 12 would have been top 5 in medal count if that was a country.

Great read, thanks. The hypocrisy surrounding Douglas and the anthem were particularly maddening.

I will say that from the update on the Lochte story I heard today on NPR, he's probably being overly vilified at this point even though KVV and you in this thread make an excellent point about the initial reaction.

I largely agree with his opinion on the matter, but I think the examples he uses to show it here are pretty poor and don't really have much to do with the issue.

Quick little comparison video worth checking out.

So many variables but it proves inferior equipment and resources make a noticeable difference when comparing eras. Obviously, training is much better now too. I've argued many times over many different sports that a lot of the elite athletes of yesterday would still find a way to be at the top of their sports today
