I mean its  clear how much teams have lost by playing the FA game in recent years. How can the players not expect owners to reel it in.

You also don’t have the big boys playing this year because of the luxury tax.

That adds to it.

Next year, this won’t be as much of an issue.

And btw, this Fa class does suck.

Except that, beyond the Big Three, you will have the same issue with the next tier of talent. It will just be covered up by the money Harper, Machado, and Kershaw receive.

Both sides are realizing that the basic logic that kept the current financial system working is no longer in effect. The teams are taking advantage while they can, and the players are awakening to the long-term implications and starting to consider their options.

HardballTalk: J.D. Martinez’s offer from the Red Sox was not quite as big as reported

That normally doesn’t matter, but this offseason it sort of does. It does because the conventional wisdom on the part of most fans I’ve encountered is that the slow free agent market is due to the players misreading the market and overvaluing themselves, as evidenced by things like J.D. Martinez turning down $125 million. Well, what if he never got an offer for $125 million? What if this $100 million offer Speier is talking about is super backloaded and only gets that high with hard-to-reach incentives? What if even Speier is wrong and the offer is less than $100 million? What if the scores of free agents who are not J.D. Martinez have been lowballed or have been given no offer whatsoever?

Significant @MLB rule change for 2018: "Mound visits without a pitching change shall be limited to six per team, per nine innings. For any extra-innings played, each Club shall be entitled to one additional non-pitching change mound visit per inning." @MLBNetwork

The changes seem genuinely well received on twitter so far.

Most people didn't want to see a pitch clock, which they didn't implement.

yet.

Once all six visits have been used, catchers may appeal to the umpires to make an additional mound visit in the instance of a cross-up between signs. Cross-up visits prior to the limit being reached will still count against the six-visit limit.

Six seems like a lot of visits.  I wonder how many examples of teams using more than 6 visits they found.

Well, you had one per inning (or per pitcher per inning? I don't recall) before requiring a pitching change. So while I imagine they aren't setting this on the low end, there were probably enough games where in the late innings there would be multiple stoppages between visits and changes to add up.

Joe Girardi is somewhere sobbing as we speak.
