Terrapin Sports Report: Durkin hires former Marshall defensive coordinator Chuck Heater

He'll coach the safeties. Has a pretty impressive resume, especially for the lack of brand name....coached on three different national championship teams and twice a Broyles Award finalist.

Nothing official yet, but Aaron Perkins (Marshall 247Sports Insider) is reporting that he'll be Maryland's defensive coordinator. Sounds like Buh may be moving elsewhere within the staff.

Makes sense. Would seem unusual to have one coach just for safeties and another just for corners (Heater and AAR, respectively) if one of them didn't have some other sort of responsibility, even with the extra positional coach now allowed. Given Heater's resume, I'd like to see what he could do calling the defense. Not much room for them to go anywhere but up after last season.

InsideMDSports: Maryland Finds its New Offensive Line Coach

Former Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring will be the new O-Line coach. He's been James Madison's run game coordinator for the last two years. He's spent his entire coaching career in Virginia, and has strong ties to the entire state's recruiting area.

Sounds like more of a recruiting-driven hire than a coaching-driven hire. Wonder if they are concerned about Beatty moving on soon, hence the desire to have someone who is very familiar with recruiting VA.

Durkin announced today that Linebackers Coach Matt Barnes will also serve as the Special Teams Coordinator this season. Pete Lembo remains on the staff as Assistant Head Coach/Tight Ends Coach.

It was also officially announced that Heater will be the Safeties Coach, so it looks like Andy Buh and Jimmy Brumbaugh will continue to share Defensive Coordinator responsibilities.

I have to think there's more with the defensive coaching situation than meets the eye right now. Will be interesting to see Heater's contract if the media does a FOIA request on it. Seems odd that someone with his resume would leave a DC position (even though it's G5, it was also his home state) to be a positional coach. I wouldn't be surprised if there are either more announcements this winter or more going on behind the scenes we don't know.

So if rumors are to be believed, it sounds like it's down to Mike Locksley or Walt Bell to be FSU's next OC. Both have potential downsides for UM....Bell would obviously mean the Terps have to replace their OC at a pretty late stage of the game (lucky for the early recruit singing period), and Locksley would give FSU a stronger local presence for recruiting.

Regarding Bell....while FSU would certainly be an upgrade to UM in terms of competitiveness and prestige (and probably money), as things stand right now I'm not so sure it is the more appealing job head-to-head. Willie Taggart has always called his own plays as a head coach, and I would assume he intends to do so at FSU, and so working under him you are almost relegated to a co-OC role. Whereas at UM, under a HC whose entire history is on defense, I'd expect the OC has about as much control over the offense as you can have, with not much more than very general direction from Durkin. That said, MD might have to show Bell a new contract if they want to keep him, which is what this may all be about anyway.

Not good news. Hope we can keep him.

Losing Bell would be a huge blow to the program. You don't have to look much further than the progression of Tyrrell Pigrome last season to see how valuable he is not only as a play-caller, but as a quarterbacks coach. Pigrome came to Maryland as an extremely raw prospect with great legs but fairly poor passing mechanics. It took Bell one full season to turn him into a quarterback capable of beating Texas with both his legs and his arm. And now this season, we'll get to see what he's able to do with Kasim Hill.

Pay the man whatever he wants.

Any whispers about this Zack? Any idea on how long this decision will take? Would be a major blow.

Not sure at this point. Hugh Freeze was at the Alabama building yesterday. If they hire him as the OC, Locksley could go to FSU. At this point, I doubt Bell would go somewhere he wouldn't have the opportunity to call plays.

Given that Durkin stripped him of his special teams duties a few weeks ago, I'd assume he was ready to move on from Lembo. Not sure why, as he has been one of the better special teams coordinators in the country the last 2 years, but we don't know everything that goes on behind the scenes. He'll now need to find a tight ends coach, but there is a title opening for Assistant Head Coach, which could perhaps be added to Aazaar Abdul-Rahim's title.

Well that was quick. Durkin hires Dave Bucar to coach tight ends. Must've just been waiting for Lembo to find something else.

Bucar has been with Canada at his previous two stops. Read that it was more Canada's call to have him at TE coach....though that still doesn't explain why Lembo was stripped of ST coordinator.
