Mike,

Nice piece.  I think your analysis of the early signing period is spot on.  Although it is an "early" signing period, that will likely become the defacto deadline for most if not all the blue-chippers, not allowing coaches the time after their bowl games to close the deal.  Hard to feel sorry for them given how much they are paid, but that is a tough assignment.

I would like to see the games shortened too, but I'm not sure I want it to be at the sacrifice of the number of plays.  Reducing halftime and more efficient replays are where I would like to start and see how far that gets us.

Looking forward to your analysis for the upcoming season which, like you, I am eager to get started.  I agree with Chris, I'd like to see more analysis and predictions-there are plenty of recaps out there.  I'm sure your best stuff will be what other writers are not focusing on.

A couple of thoughts:

Yeah, Ohio State is clearly the team to beat in the Big 10, but don't sleep on Penn State.  I suspect Michigan is overrated-they are very, very young and I'm not as big a fan of Harbaugh's coaching as some are, especially himself. Wisconsin is the class of the west, but Northwestern has some of the best playmakers and an improving defense-they could challenge.  Still a big gap between East and West.

I keep hearing big names tossed about for the Ole Miss job, and I just don't get it.  Who would really want that job-it's an invitation to get whipped by Alabama, Auburn, and LSU on a regular basis, and they will probably be on probation up to their eyeballs with all the negative press.  Maybe they'll overpay to get a top-tier coach, but I would then question someone wading into that cesspool just for the money.  Hmmm, it does kind of sound like a Lane Kiffin type of job.

Speaking of Kiffin, what is it with Florida schools and recycled coaches:

Florida Atlantic-the enigmatic Kiffin

Central Florida-Charlie Strong (late of Louisville &Texas)

Florida International-Butch Davis (late of Miami, Cleveland Browns, and North Carolina)

It will be interesting to see who is the first one to jump-my money's on Kiffin.

Thanks, Jim. I do plan to move away from recapping games, unless there is a topic that emerges which really merits discussion. Would like to do more thought-analysis using advanced stats, to the extent that they are available for the college level and whether I actually have enough time to pore over them and come up with something to write about.

I am looking forward to seeing how the early signing period unfolds. I agree that in all likelihood we will see more players sign in Dec than in Feb, so they can have it out of the way for the holidays and start of the new year.

Nitpick: Strong is at South Florida. Scott Frost, former Oregon OC, took the UCF job last year.

You're right, it would be very Kiffinesque for him to jump at the Ole Miss job, leaving FL Atlantic before ever coaching a game.

Thanks for catching my misplacement of Strong-got my Florida schools a bit up.  The AAC has more than its share of interesting.  Frost, as you mentioned, Major Applewhite at Houston, and of course don't forget our old friend (?) Randy Edsall back at UConn.  I bet that coaching lineup looks a LOT different in three years.

It's the SEC. anyone claiming the Big 10 is better is biased.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"Now OPS sucks.  Got it."

"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty
