So where would MLS rank among the world leagues at this point?  It seems to be growing slowly but surely in popularity, but how about the quality?  I know it's not as good as the top European leagues, but would it be as good as the 2nd or 3rd division leagues?

A mixed bag if you read the links... (including 2 above from ESPN on Guzan)...

It's not the EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A....  Liga MX probably better...  Ligue 1 probably better.

There are probably 10 other leagues that MLS is comparable to.

The play continues to improve.  Lots of other aspects about the league continue to improve.

Overall it's on very steady ground, and only improving.

Good stuff, thanks Chris.  Looks like they're getting there.

I do wish we could come up with some better names than "City X United", "City X FC", or worst of all, "Real Salt Lake".  But that's a minor issue :)

It would be so much better if they just did "Washington SC*", "New York SC", "LA SC", etc., than allow nicknames to come up organically.

* NOT "FC". This is 'Merca, it's soccer. Soccer Club.

Actually, it would be better if they were pro/rel and allowed teams to just pop up and rise up. Then you'll have teams named for cities, and neighborhoods, and maybe some historical names brought back (like Bethlehem Steel), and it would be much more fun.

Maybe it's partly because of that new stadium smell, but that's a good-sized crowd in Atlanta. Given how they tend to be pretty casual when it comes to showing up to support pro sports teams, I wouldn't expect that to be the norm there, especially since it never struck me as a soccer-loving town.
