NBC Sports / Hardball Talk: http://hardballtalk....-total-rebuild/

I've thought Fielder to the Cubs made some sense, if it was a 5 year deal or less. Obviously thought anything past that in contract length, that Fielder would want to come to the AL, and have the option of moving to DH.

Fielder's market really thins, if Chicago is not a legitimate option.

I think Epstein received a bit too much credit in Boston, but I expect him and Hoyer to build a powerhouse in Chicago. The fact that the Cubs have not been to the Series since 1908 means nothing to me. The Cubs can easily become exactly what we have seen out of Boston the past decade plus.

Looking at the payroll obligations of the Cubs over the next few years: https://spreadsheets...UYg&output=html, Chicago should be very well positioned going forward.

How long until Carlos Marmol can no longer walk the streets of Chi-town without a bodyguard? He MELTED DOWN today.

Pretty cool moment in Wrigley yesterday as Kerry Wood comes into the game, strikes out a batter, then leaves the mound and retires as a Cub to a roaring, and probably blitzed home crowd.

Man, how exciting was it to watch the Cubs when they had Prior and Wood pitching back-to-back nights?

That's what it's all about, Ricker! Loved it..

As a Cub fan, I can't help but think of Kerry Wood as the ultimate "What Might have Been" player..Prior too, obviously, but man, when Wood came up, he was electric. I drove up to Philly & Pittsburgh every time he pitched, it was appointment viewing for a few years. The Cubbies made the playoffs three times with Wood as their #1, yet he retires with only 86 wins..He looked like the next Nolan Ryan back in 1998, the #34 and all.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Cubs are telling teams that "nearly everyone but starter Jeff Samardzija is available."

Some names on that list you've heard before: Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster, Carlos Marmol and Alfonso Soriano, amongst others. Apparently club president Theo Epstein is open to moving Starlin Castro as well. Castro "can be obtained for two impact prospects," according to Nightengale. Bryan LaHair could provide pop for a contender. Trading him would open the door for top prospect Anthony Rizzo. Epstein has never shown an aversion for taking risks, so this situation warrants monitoring. On August 1, Chicago's roster may look nothing like it does today.

"USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported Thursday that the Cubs were willing to trade anyone outside of right-hander Jeff Samardzija, but team president Theo Epstein later said that he's not looking to trade shortstop Starlin Castro"

He could just be trying to drive up the price.

Dempster has to move sooner rather than later, right? His value is sky high right now!

Really nice showcase for Dempster today, shutting out the Red Sox for 7 innings.

Good pitcher, and apparently a good guy as well.

I wouldn't mind the O's handing him the ball every 5 days. (depending on the price, obviously)

Bump. There was discussion in the O's section, asking about the Cubs payroll obligations going forward.

I'm guessing neither Olt nor Profar is in that deal.
